What about lobsters? Something prepared for a meal at perhaps your favorite restaurant? Yeah, that’s true; they are number one in seafood but despite what you may think, these creatures aren’t really meant to be eaten. It’s because of the mentality we’ve orchestrated ourselves around about consuming these creatures that we often times lose any sense of information about this that could be beneficial when learning about these creatures, and believe it or not, there’s a lot to learn.
Interesting Facts
Can they see?
No, they can’t see. They are able to navigate around their surroundings by the other senses, that being taste, feeling, smell, and they are able to sense vibrations and feelings with their legs so they can tell when a predator may be approaching close behind them.
Where would you find their teeth and brain?
That’s actually an interesting question because you won’t find them in the traditional areas. Their brain is located in their throats and you’ll find their teeth in their stomachs. They definitely have a very weird set-up going on around their bodies.
What do they eat?
Aside from the small fish, they get a hold of, the main course as well… themselves. They will eat one another in a heartbeat making them very cannibalistic in nature and this is mainly because well, they can’t tell who’s who so, everything is food to them.
Can they regenerate?
Yes, they can regenerate. If they feel they are in danger, they can detach their claws and it will eventually grow back good as new, something we humans wish we could have at times.
Do they shed?
Yes, they do shed, but not in the conventional sort of way. They do not remove their skin; they actually shed their entire skeleton to be replaced with a new one. Talk about losing your baby teeth…
How many eggs do they have?
A female lobster can lay up to 10,000 eggs in their nest but the sad part is only about ten of those will actually live to see daylight let alone maturity. This is because of predators and the fact these lobsters aren’t going to keep track of all of them.
Fun Facts
They don’t scream in pain when you cook them.
The noise you hear is “air that has been trapped in the stomach and forced through the mouth after being out of water for short periods of time,” says Bayer. Lobsters don’t have vocal cords, and they can’t process pain.
