Fun & Interesting Facts About Raccoons

Raccoons were originally found in North and South America, but over the years, they have been found all over the world. These creatures are unique looking, and share many qualities with other animals such as the bear. Raccoons may look cute and friendly, but they can be dangerous if they are spooked or if they feel threatened. You may be able to identify a raccoon, but do you know about some of their unique qualities?

Interesting Facts

Types of Raccoons

Six different types of raccoons have been identified as of the present, but all of the different kinds of raccoons are very similar in nature and appearance. Generally, raccoons live approximately five years, are small in length and weight, and they tend to inhabit colder climates rather than hot ones.

Did you know?

Raccoons are extremely intelligent creatures and have the ability to quickly identify food using their noses. When you find one of your trashcans knocked over and sorted through, it may have been the work of a raccoon. Raccoon uses their hands to pick through the trash and find food that will satisfy their appetites. Many people think that raccoons hibernate, but in fact, they don’t. In order to survive harsh winters, raccoons eat extra during the weeks leading up to winter to help them bulk up so that they can withstand the cold. Many raccoons seek shelter in burrows or holes during snow and bitterly cold weather.

Young Raccoons

Baby raccoons are born and raised to very protective mothers. Raccoon mothers will raise their young, and eight weeks after birth, young raccoons will join their mother’s “kits” (a group of raccoons), in hunting. Young ones typically stay with their mother until the winter is over, and then, for the most part, they will be off on their own.

Raccoons as Pets

Raccoons can be very dangerous, but there have been instances when they have been kept as pets. However, they only respond to human company in a positive way when they are young. They may be cute, but they can make loud noises that might not make them the greatest pet to own.
