One of the worst things that can happen is that water ends up in your ears after going for a swim or taking a shower, or even if you run without an umbrella or other protection during a torrential rainstorm. Why does water tend to get into your ears during some moments and at other moments, it isn’t a problem? Water usually drains out of your ears naturally. The times when water gets trapped in your ears are because there could be too much ear wax build-up. Sometimes it can be more of a problem for those who have narrow ear canals.
If you don’t remove water from your ears, it can lead to an ear infection known as swimmer’s ear which is characterized by ringing in the ears, hearing loss, dizziness, feeling off-balance, and pain. The best thing to do is to remove water from your ears immediately if it does not go out on its own. Let’s go over a few tips on how to remove water from your ears safely.
Use A Hairdryer To Blow By Your Ears
You can always use a hairdryer to dry up the water sitting in your ears. You will want to pull your ear in a gentle way so that the ear canal straightens, and use your other hand to blow the hairdryer in your ear. You will want to use it in the coolest setting so it does not cause your ear to overheat and it is comfortable. The coolest setting will be enough to dry out your ear. You may need to use the hairdryer several times if one time does not do the trick for you. However, if you tried this method and you don’t like how it feels, then, fortunately, there are other methods you can try as well.
Rubbing Alcohol Or Hydrogen Peroxide Can Help
If you do not have a perforated eardrum, you can safely add small drops of rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. That will help evaporate the water. However, again if you have a perforated eardrum, you do not want to use this method as it not only would be painful but can be harmful to the ear. If you are unsure about this method, then you can do the next thing that can help which is listed below.
Allow Gravity To Work Its Magic
On which side do you sleep? What you may want to do is after noticing that you have water trapped in your ear, you will want to put a towel on your pillow and sleep on the side of the ear that has the trapped water. It will trickle down onto the pillow overnight. And you may find there is a bonus of some wax coming out as well. You can also take a nap or rest right after it happens so the water can perhaps come out a little quicker. There is one more thing that you can do to help remove the water as well.
Yawn And Do Some Other Movements
You can move your jaw around by yawning or chewing as that may help remove the water from your ears. You can even tug your earlobe gently which may help to remove the water from your ears too. Remember that the jaw joint is connected to the ear canal which is why you want to do that.
However, whatever you do, do not use cotton swabs or your finger, or anything else to clear out the water. That will defeat the purpose of putting the water further into your ear canal, and you can also hurt yourself by doing that. It is tempting, but you want to make sure you do not do that!
