There is nothing wrong with enjoying a cup of java each morning as you need a bit of a caffeine boost to wake you up. Coffee also has some benefits as it contains antioxidants and can help keep your blood sugar regulated as well. The ideal thing to do is to develop a taste for black coffee. But most people cannot bring themselves to do that as they need to add something to their coffee.
Let’s now talk about seven things to not add to your coffee, and then you can look into alternatives after the fact if the idea of drinking black coffee doesn’t thrill you.
Shelf Stable Half And Half Creamers
Those convenient creamers that you see in restaurants you will want to skip. They contain half creamer and half additives to keep the creamer preserved. You don’t want to add those additives and preservatives into your body.
One of the most common additives that they use is sodium phosphate as it can increase your chances of cardiovascular ailments, bones, and kidney problems even though the FDA says it is safe. You are better off asking the server to give you a small amount of milk to add to your coffee.
Artificial Sweeteners
What is worse than using actual sugar? Using artificial sweeteners even though they have zero calories (which is the point of why they are a thing). If you consume too many artificial sweeteners, then you will consume more foods that are artificially made which includes processed high-calorie foods that are loaded with trans fats. In the end, artificial sweeteners make you gain weight! You are better off with adding a pinch of sugar to your coffee!
Flavored Creamers
Flavored creamers are delicious and are also loaded with fat and calories in addition to additives. Therefore, these are the culprits for raising LDL or bad cholesterol and can be linked to digestive problems as well. Go for regular milk instead.
Flavored Syrups
Flavored syrups like flavored creamers are loaded with fat, calories, and additives. And with that being said, you will want to avoid getting the regular versions of flavored lattes. Go and opt for the light versions which are made with mostly milk and some sugar and coffee.
Be Mindful Of How Much Sugar You Add
If you are able to only stick to adding a quarter of a sugar restaurant-size packet, then that is okay. However, most people pour several packets into their coffee. That is too much sugar! And consuming too much sugar daily will lead to diabetes, weight gain, and cardiovascular problems. You will also be more prone to infections as sugar creates the ultimate breeding ground for bacteria.
Oil Based Keto Creamers
Ironically, if you are on the ketogenic diet, you are looking to shed pounds quickly. But this is a high-fat and low-carb diet, and oil-based keto creamers are extremely high in saturated fats. Ironically this can cause you to gain weight as well as develop cardiovascular diseases. Opt for low-fat and low-carb creamers instead.
Condensed Milk
Condensed milk is a common ingredient in some Spanish and Vietnamese coffees, and it is extremely high in sugar. The amount of sugar in two tablespoons of condensed milk is just almost as much as a Hershey’s chocolate bar. You will want to skip that one.
If you are looking for alternatives to just milk and a pinch of sugar to add to your morning coffee, then you can always talk to a nutritionist who can guide you on what to add to your coffee. Not everyone can really acquire a taste for black coffee and that is okay. But if so, be aware of what you are adding to it and look for healthy and safe alternatives.
